I was invited to help open 96 Gillespie Gallery by being an artist in residence where my duties included helping build out the gallery and curate and create the opening show. I ended up spending most of my time in the darkroom printing c prints and organizing the show. The exhibit was the first of three that I would create exploring what I "took home" with me from Alabama. This exhibit's main idea was crafted in the US, where I bought candy that I seemed to have only found in Alabama, and paired them up with half frame images that I took in Alabama. The final installation and design was done in London.
I used the old pine paneling boards that were removed from the walls of the gallery in the renovation process and made them into shelves that accommodated thick sheets of glass each with a 16" X 20" photograph mounted on the back, and an extended shelf displaying the candy. This exhibit's intention was to make the viewer find surprise and delight in each combination, like I found at any moment in everyday while living in Alabama exploring the back roads, stores and old buildings.
I included other artists I worked with in Alabama in this exhibit. The final exhibit, with a fake arrow sign in the window displaying the name, "Ice, Worms and Plate Lunch" included these artists: Butch Anthony, Lucy Begg, Cynthia Connolly, Robie Gay and Kerry Larkin.
Box set of "Ice, Worms and Plate Lunch", containing all 12 C-prints from the exhibit. Here shown is the 8 x 10 inch box set. Box has letterpressed cover.
